Glossary

Glossary.

Terms we use on the website and in our materials, explained in a sentence or two.

Aerial SIM profile

An operator setting that tells the network the device is airborne. We are preparing it for AKIZU SIM.

See: AKIZU SIM →
Brain Duo

A concept of the Brain unit with two modems and two SIM cards. Every frame travels through two operators and the first copy to arrive counts.

See: AKIZU Brain →
BVLOS

Beyond Visual Line of Sight flight. The pilot relies on video and telemetry.

See: Solutions →
C2

Command and Control. The link that carries commands from the ground station to the drone.

Deadline

The maximum allowed frame age in a given profile. It travels with the frame and is never extended.

See: Technology →
DFR

Drone as First Responder. The drone takes off towards an incident before a patrol arrives.

See: Solutions →
Evidence package

A signed flight record in AKIZU Platform: what the operator saw, how old it was and which commands were issued.

See: AKIZU Platform →
Exposure time (t_exp)

The moment the drone sensor captured the frame, on the drone clock. VERA counts image age from it.

See: Technology →
FEC

Forward Error Correction. Parity packets repair losses without waiting for retransmission.

GDR

Gradual Decoder Refresh. After a loss the image recovers in bands instead of one large key frame.

Image age

The time from frame exposure on the drone to its display to the operator. The main number AKIZU tracks.

See: Technology →
Image states

Valid, Reduced freshness and Unavailable. Direct shows one of them for every frame.

See: AKIZU Direct →
KVAL-1

AKIZU qualification target: image age under 25 ms. It is a target, not a result.

See: Technology →
LET-1

AKIZU target: p99 image age under 50 ms on a real drone with VOXL 2. Planned for Q1 2027.

See: Technology →
Network latency

The time a packet takes to cross the network. It is only one leg of the image journey.

See: Technology →
Neutral screen

The screen Direct shows instead of a frozen frame when image age cannot be guaranteed. It states the reason.

See: AKIZU Direct →
p50, p99

Percentiles. p50 is the median, p99 is the value 99 % of frames do not exceed. In control, p99 is what matters.

SORA 2.5

EASA’s risk assessment methodology for drone operations in the Specific category. It also requires knowing control-loop latency.

See: Solutions →
VERA

AKIZU’s own protocol. Every frame carries its exposure time and deadline, so the station either proves the image or rejects it.

See: Technology →
Verify

A planned AKIZU measurement that optically determines how old the image on a customer drone is.

See: AKIZU Platform →
VOXL 2

ModalAI onboard computer with a Qualcomm QRB5165 processor. The basis of both Brain and AKIZU Drone.

See: AKIZU Brain →
WebCodecs, WebGPU

Browser interfaces for video decoding and GPU work. Used by the Direct Desktop receiver.

See: AKIZU Direct →

How to read the glossary

A term is not a promise. It is how the site speaks.

If a term points at a number, the number has its mark on the measurement page. The glossary does not repeat the mark as a result.

VERA, LET-1 and KVAL-1 are names of our work. They are not approved abbreviations of a standard.

If a term is missing, write. We would rather add it than leave it meaning two things.

Bring to the meeting

  • Image age is not network latency.
  • p99 is not an average.
  • A neutral screen is not a player fault.

This is not

  • A legal definition.
  • A price for a term.
  • Someone else's standard under our name.
